Inter-Racial Adoption Posted on 05-11-2005

I heard this story on the radio yesterday, and I thought I'd share it. Here's the audio. Just listen to 1:45-5:40. What do you think of transracial adoption, specifically White parents adopting Black children?

I listened to it and I don't see a thing wrong with it. I've seen black families take in white children, so I don't see anything wrong with the opposite. You have a mother that loves desires to be the mother, and a good mother to a child who NEEDS a mother. It's goin to be looked at like every other interracial relationship will be tho.

It is ok to me. As long as they give the child a better opportunity than their current situation will

I didnt feel like listening to the audio, but this is my personal opinion... There are too many children in the system for them to be denied a pair of loving parents who want them, regardless of race. BUT...I think its always best to try to let blacks adopt blacks, whites adopt whites, etc...Mainly for empathetic reasoning I feel this this way. I believe preference should always be given to parents of the same race/ethnicity of the child. But in the end if a pair of white parents who are loving, have a stable home, and just want a child to love and care for regardless of the the fact they are black want to take them in as their own...more power to them. * starts thinking about LOSING ISAIAH *

I didn't listen to the audio. But I don't believe in it. I think more Blacks should adopt children. White people adopt Asian children a lot though.

Cosigns on what Jamila said. For all of you who couldn't click on an MP3, they have to discount Black kids since nobody wants them. I don't personally know of any Blacks adopting... *starts thinking about Antwone Fisher* Remember, that was a true story. I'd like to think we have more to offer foster children than that shyt! The Adoption History Project wrote:
... The debate about transracial adoption changed course in 1972, when the National Association of Black Social Workers issued a statement that took “a vehement stand against the placements of black children in white homes for any reason,” calling transracial adoption “unnatural,” “artificial,” “unnecessary,” and proof that African-Americans continued to be assigned to “chattel status.” The organization was so committed to the position that black children’s healthy development depended on having black parents that its President, Cenie J. Williams, argued that temporary foster and even institutional placements were preferable to adoption by white families. This opposition slowed black-white adoptions to a trickle...

precisely... :-k but how does one keep their own racism out of the teachings? for example, it's one thing to tell a black kid that crackers steal everything from black culture (accurate or not). but what happens if you do it vice-versa? self-hating Caucasians? :-k
