Dillard University?? Posted on 08-12-2005
tyren

I'm going into my second semester at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and I'm a Jouralism major. U of L is what you'd call a PWI, and I have no problem with it, but I know I'd like to attend a smaller liberal arts school with a more in depth African American History department, and Dillard seems like a perfect fit. Although, I attended schools with even less diverse students (my high school had less than 20 out of 300 black seniors), and I'm constantly being criticized for not being black enough or not fitting into the stereotype. I really want to attend an HBCU because of the sense of history and atmosphere of being around (what I would assuume to be) like minded students. NOTE: THIS IS NOT MY OPINION It seems that the common consensus on HBCUS is that they are party schools and that they are filled with easily distracted Hip Hp heads. Or have I been misinformed??

No matter what school you go to, you will find two different groups of black people...the ones you can feel comfortable chilling with, and the ones you know you can only stomach in passing.. (passing by to class, passing by to the library, etc.) Yes there is a bad reputation about black colleges but there are a few that get ooos and aahhhs from CEOs in the financial district of NY. Do research and you'll find out which ones they are. No matter what anyone says, it isn't where you go to school, it is what you do when you get there. Every big employer wants to see big time grades, internship or research experience, and a lot of community and school involvement. be an all around student and they'll love you...a "party" school wouldn't hold an ambitious person back, and you sound like an ambitious person They party every Friday at Yale. They party at Howard (and that school has a wonderful reputation in NY's Financial District)....they party at Penn State....etc. Do research, find a school that suits you and don't expect to find "like-minded" people...what you CAN expect is to LEARN how to communicate with people who are NOT like minded and get along with them This is why college IS for everyone...it enlightens you socially. And being that we are social animals, we should learn how to tolerate, communicate, and get along with as much DIFFERENCE as possible, because there is a lot of disparity within our own race that we need to deal with.
