A dynamic veteran sports journalist and broadcaster Mark Gray has almost 25 years of experience in multimedia communications. Mark’s distinctive style is energetic and provocative in broadcast (radio & TV), print, and on the internet. His SportsGroove brand continues to set new trends in new and non-traditional media.
An award winning writer, Gray’s professional experience began at the Atlanta Daily World newspaper as Sports Editor where he redefined community and local sports coverage in that market. From there he became a general sports correspondent for the Atlanta Journal & Constitution. For three years Gray was a sports columnist for Creative Loafing, Atlanta’s City Paper, which led to his opportunity to write for the Atlanta Tribune. He was also the original Atlanta Hawks NBA blogger for The Sporting News. In 1997, Gray was honored by the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists with the Best Feature Story for Print. He was also a contributor for Atlanta Hawks, Falcons, and Braves team publications. Currently, he is a correspondent for the Afro American Newspaper.
Gray is an accomplished broadcast having debuted the weekly version of ESPN Radio’s Game Day program with former Major League pitcher Rob Dibble. He introduced his concept of the “Weekend Sports Groove” and also was a host for Game Night for the worldwide leader in sports as well.
Mark has been on the cutting edge of satellite radio since its inception. “The SportsGroove Radio Show” on XM Satellite Radio was the first originally produced sports program on that platform. He was also the first weekend host for MLB Live, the Major League Baseball channel’s, wrap up show on Home Plate channel 175. Gray also hosted talk radio programs in Atlanta, on WQXI 790 The Zone, and for Radio One’s WOL-AM (News Talk 1450 AM) in Washington D.C. on The SportsGroove Radio Show. He now has a weekly podcast on www.TheShadowLeague.com and is also a host on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C.
Gray is also a college sports play by play announcer for the Heritage Sports Radio Network (www.HSRN.com) and has called the NCAA Division II Football Championship, the CIAA Basketball Tournament, the SWAC Football and Basketball championships, and selected Ivy and Patriot League games.
Gray’s unmistakable candor is his calling card. He was a game analyst for college football and basketball broadcasts on the former MBC Network and his work has been seen on Sunshine Network and Comcast SportsNet. He is a frequent guest commentator to Sports Talk on Newschannel 8 in Washington, D.C. and on CCTV America (Chinese Central Television Network).
He continues to produce innovative programming for his “SportsGroove TV” brand that includes: The Beltway Sports Report, HBCU Sports Nation, and “Not Hatin’ Just Sayin’”.
Mark is a 1990 Who’s Who Graduate of Morgan State University where he received his B.S. degree in telecommunications/Broadcast Journalism. He currently is an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland College Park in the Merrill School of Journalism.
