Kwame S. Salter was born in Delhi, Louisiana and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from the UW-Whitewater, graduating Magna Cum Laude and earned his Masters in Educational Administration from UW-Madison. He served as the Director of the UW-Madison’s Afro-American Race Relations and Cultural Center from 1970-1973. From 1976 until 1986, Kwame serve as the Executive Director of Dane Co. Parent Council, Inc, the Project Head Start Grantee for Dane County as well as interim Executive Director of the Community Action Commission, Inc. (CAC) of Dane County. He has been recognized as an Outstanding Alumni by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Throughout his adult life, Kwame has been a tireless campus activist, community organizer, political leader and elected official giving voice to the disenfranchised and a persistent force for strategic inclusion in corporate America
Kwame won election to the Madison Metropolitan Board of Education, becoming one of the youngest person elected. He served three terms, a total of 9 years, on the Board of Education. During his tenure he served 6 years as an officer of the Board—2 years as Vice-President and 4 consecutive years as President of the Board of Education. Additionally, Kwame served two terms on the University of Wisconsin—Madison’s Graduate School of Business, Board of Advisors.
Kwame has been cited and honored by a number of organizations, groups, and media. He was selected as one of ’80 for the 80’s highlighting young leaders by the Milwaukee Journal newspaper. In 2006, Kwame was featured in Celebrating African-American Achievements: The Inaugural Edition, ‘Who’s Who in Black Chicago”
He was recruited to the Oscar Mayer Foods Corporation in 1986 by the Chairman and CEO. At Oscar Mayer, he moved rapidly from Corporate Affirmative Action Manager to HR Director of the Oscar Mayer Business Unit in Madison, Wisconsin. Kwame’s professional HR experience has been varied and deep. In 1995, he was appointed Sr. Director, HR for the Kraft General Foods', North American Foodservice Division and moved to Glenview, Illinois.
During his company’s evolution from Kraft General Foods to Kraft Global, Kwame was appointed to positions of increasing responsibility within the company’s HR function—from VP, HR Sales & Customer Service, VP Global Functions, Staffing and Diversity. In 2008, Kwame retired as the Senior Vice-President, HR, Kraft Global Supply Chain. Presently, Kwame is an Adjunct Professor at Concordia University Chicago and President of The Salter Consulting Group. LLC. His first book, Striving While Black…In Corporate America will be published soon by Pocket Mentor Publishing, Inc.
Kwame lives in Oak Park, IL with his wife Phyllis Harris. He is the father of four children, Kevin Jamal, Keri-Jamelda Shahidi, Matthew Salter, and Lauren and has five dynamic grandchildren.
Current Whereabouts:
Writing, teaching MBA students, consulting with businesses and motivational speaking.
