Leadership is the ability to provide direction toward preferred future aspirations and aligns the followers toward achievement in specified goals. Moreover, leadership is viewed as a dynamic interactive process that involves various dimensions, including planning, organizing, directing and controlling. The activities of an organized group can be influenced by a process in which the efforts to achieve the goals and tasks are managed by leadership. Leadership can be explained as a group of individuals who have been inspired by a person to work together toward achieving common goals. Leadership ensures that that the organization works successfully and accomplishes the desired goals. Leadership qualities are not inborn but can be developed gradually through education and self-study. Leadership is about awakening the persistence and passion among its followers, colleagues, friends, community members. Some have defined leadership as an ability to transform dream into reality.
One of the qualities I hold as a leader is courage to emerge from my comfort zone as I suffer from ADHD and anxiety. I plan to be active on my college campus by showing others that being impaired from these conditions doesn’t restrict you from achieving your goals. I want to be a leader in strength and perseverance. I plan to take a therapy dog to college with me. Above all else, a leader must have COURAGE. The majority of people fail to achieve the quality of life they seek because they are shackled by their own fears. Thoreau said, “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” It’s not that the courageous leader is not afraid. Everyone is afraid at one time or another. Courage is the will to press on, to do what is necessary and what is right, and to overcome obstacles even when afraid. It isn’t courage if you’re not afraid. The only antidote for fear is courage.
Another great quality of a good leader is to lead by example. This one may seem self-explanatory, but you would be shocked at the number of leaders that would never consider doing what they ask of those they lead. One of the best ways to lose the respect and trust in your people is to continually fail to lead by example. Leadership does not mean just imparting instructions to its followers but also striving hard to implement and achieve the desired goals. If you are the boss of a company that does not mean you will have leadership qualities. Leadership makes its followers want to accomplish high goals. Thus, leadership is defined as a process that encourages the followers to achieve their objectives. Look at any phenomenal leader. They are self-starters. They live what they preach. They demand excellence from themselves before they ever demand excellence from anyone else.
The third quality, leaders must have a strong sense of VALUES if they are to succeed in the long term. Values are enduring standards of behavior. They are the stuff upon which our reputations are built. They help us determine whom we can count on, how people will react in given situations, and whom we want as friends. The chances are good that if you follow the golden rule, do the right thing when nobody is looking, and live your life the way your grandmother told you to you will be demonstrating a sense of values that others will readily respect and follow.

Life & Professional Aspirations:
My Name is Cheyenne Grace Hill. I am 18 years old from Owasso, Oklahoma and I am affiliated with the Cherokee tribe with a blood quantum of 50 percent. I have 8 members in my family. My parents decided they wanted to adopt as their plan “A” for having a family. They became foster parents as soon as they got married and within 5 months of their wedding date… they brought me home. I was their first of 20 fosters kids they would care for over the next several years. I would go on to be adopted by Jay and Susan Hill along with 5 others foster children. My dad is Korean and adopted from a Korean orphanage at the age of 5. It was important to both of my parents to adopt instead of having their own family the traditional way. They were able to have their own children. They told us the world is full of people so why not save a child from abuse or impoverishment instead of birth one. It is a path they wanted. They not only adopted us but they adopted our past. Two of my adoptive brothers are therapeutic and have been in treatment for several years but my parents never gave up on them.
I have had incredible opportunities provided to me to learn about my Cherokee Heritage by visiting museums and attending Cherokee heritage events and camps. I have learned about my dad’s Korean culture. I have siblings that are also African American and we march in the Martin Luther King Jr. parade yearly to honor their culture. I love the cultural diversity of my family.
I see the sacrifices my adoptive parents have made to raise 6 foster children and I want to make them proud. They have taught me to be strong, independent, responsibility and shown me the meaning of family.
I think that I am a great candidate for this scholarship because throughout my life I have learned to be very careful on obtaining my needs and wants. My parent's philosophy has always been to be able to finance our own wants the best we could while they supply the life support such as food, home and clothing. I believe they did this to show and teach me individual responsibility in order to be a productive citizen. With that in mind I plan on funding my own education to the best of my ability. Throughout my years in high school I have been consistent with my academics. And I have been a member of Future Farmers of America (FFA) for 5 years beginning in 8th grade. I have been an active member of our AgEd Program/FFA Chapter by excelling with my out of class ag-related projects in both showing swine and cattle for 4 years winning countless competitions in the show ring. I have given great effort and I have grown personally from this experience. I see the value of giving my absolute best and the success that results from that type of effort. Throughout this time, I have grown and matured into the type of young lady that I believe will be a success regardless of what I choose to do as a profession. Through active involvement in a variety of competitive and leadership based activities I have continued to improve my work ethic, drive, and determination. I have participated in public speaking contests and leadership events across the state. I have an outgoing, friendly, and task-oriented mindset that I believe will make me an asset to any program or business in the future.
Receiving this Scholarship will help me further my education in the career as a nurse anesthetist or large animal veterinarian. I feel that I am very worthy for this Scholarship because of the drive that I have compared to other students, I like to challenge myself in school. Students in my grade level would be choosing to take an art class when they could be learning something new in a chemistry class that will be important for college. Or students will transfer out of Spanish class just because it’s difficult and they don’t want to risk getting a low grade. My parents are both graduates from Oklahoma State University and both hold Master’s degrees. Getting an education is the utmost important goal I could obtain in life. It is the foundation that is needed for me to build my future.
Attaining a college degree has always been my dream and in accessing this scholarship will enable me to get a step closer in realizing this dream. The need to be educated and qualified has always been of utmost important to me thus taking this bold step. Throughout my life I have sought to always acquire as much knowledge as I could.
Before I can achieve my biggest goal for these next ten years, I must obtain a quality education from a premiere college such as Oklahoma State University. Being adopted has taught me a lot, it made me realize that not every kid gets a second chance at life like I got. I believe that it is my duty to go to college and make my adoptive parents proud.
I am in need of financial assistance to pay for my college expenses due to my family’s financial situation. My mom co-owns a small family business with my grandfather and aunt. It is an oilfield equipment business. When the price of oil dropped dramatically 2 years ago, my mom had to take a 60% pay cut. Because of this, we have had to put our house up for sale, my home I have lived in for the last 8 years. My grandfather also suffers from Alzheimer’s and can longer work at the business. I am proud of my mom. She is truly a role model for me. Because they have used all of their savings to try and keep our home, they no longer have money to send me to college. The yearly cost for OSU is $24,200. We will be depending solely on student loans and any scholarships I am awarded. I do plan on working too while I am attending college. I plan to work 20 hours a week and to enroll in 12-15 college credit hours.
