Personal Statement From ancient through modern times, health care has proven to be of great importance. Without it, the high susceptibility of humans to various forms of diseases would have made life on earth unbearable. Today, many people fail to realize the great amount of courage it takes to be a doctor. This is because they don’t recognize that doctors dedicate their lives to helping others. One thing I have come to understand about health care is that an individual must have an intense commitment to alleviate pain and suffering due to the great amount of devotion, it entails. Throughout my life, I have had numerous events and experiences that contributed to my decision to become a medical doctor. The first event occurred when I was about ten years old. My family lived in a small city, Uhi located at the Southwestern part of Edo-State, Nigeria. Summer times in Uhi are usually unpleasant but this particular summer was the worst I had experienced in my life. It was full of harsh conditions and extreme temperatures that dried up our streams. While striving to survive this terrorizing situation, families contracted diseases from drinking contaminated water. As a child, I was greatly troubled to see many people die of diseases such as cholera, malaria, tuberculosis, fever, dehydration, malnutrition, etc. I feared for my own life as well as the lives of my family. It was with the help of doctors from a private hospital - located about 80 miles from my city that my family and I survived this experience. Due to the immense dedication and care of these doctors, I made up my mind that I was going to become a doctor and ever since then, I have been pursuing this goal. When I was a junior in high school, my family immigrated to the United States. This was one of the toughest yet most rewarding times for me in terms of my academic life. During my first semester of high school in U.S., my dean placed me in one science class (Biology), and my other classes were social sciences, math, etc. Being a lover of science, I wanted to take courses that related to my future goal. I tried to talk my dean into changing her mind, but she resisted, saying that it will be a big risk to place me in these classes all together and I probably would not be able to handle the workload. After trying as hard as I could to convince her, I decided to talk to my dad about it; he called my dean immediately and spoke with her. Finally, my dean rescheduled me into chemistry and physics three weeks after school started. To my dean’s greatest surprise, I did very well in all my classes and my dean promised to support me in any academic endeavor I would take on in the future. During my senior year of high school, I applied to the Annual Symposium of Career Opportunities in Biomedical Sciences (AMPHS), and I was selected to participate in the 16th annual symposium. During this symposium, I was able to get information about various schools and programs relating to my field of study. I also got the opportunity to talk to students with the same career goals as myself, and most importantly I got the privilege to discuss various issues/concerns with a variety of doctors. My zeal of being a physician is so great; there are many things out there in the world that needs to be done. It is sad, seeing people going through so much pain due to an insufficient amount of medical doctors. I want to make a change in this society. I want to prove to the world that there is someone here who cares, and who is ready to do anything to make life on earth more comfortable. I just need that opportunity, the opportunity to go out there into the real world of medicine, and fulfill my longtime desire.
Most Memorable Moment:
The most memorable event in my life occurred when I was about nine years old. It was a pleasant Tuesday morning and as I got ready for school I saw my grandmother work out of her room, heading towards the restroom. Coming back, she suddenly fell down and not knowing what to do, I shouted “Daddy, and my dad came out of his room at once to my grandmother. He did all he could to restore her but she was dead. It was a very emotional period for my family. Due to that event I didn’t go to school for three weeks. This occurrence touched my life a great deal and it was from it and numerous other incidents that I decided I was going be a Medical Doctor.
