Disability Policy Research Emerging Investigator Award Program

Dollar Amount: Up to $30,000
Deadline: March 8, 2013
Sponsor: Social Security Administration
Award Type: Grant Money
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on 02/01/2013

The Disability Policy Research Emerging Investigator Award Program provides financial support to junior faculty who are recipients of PhD or equivalent degrees within the past 5 years to conduct disability research projects lasting no longer than twelve months. The DRC Emerging Investigator Program is part of the Disability Research Consortium, funded by the Social Security Administration (SSA) [http://www.disabilitypolicyresearch.org/DRC].The program’s focus is on investigators who can further develop their lines of disability policy research or leverage existing work with large data sets and advanced data analytic skills for use in this area for the first time.

Projects funded by this award are expected to contribute to the investigator’s ongoing disability policy research agenda and lead to additional extramural funding. The proposed research plan should therefore include one or more publications in top-tier journals and the preparation of a podcast and policy brief for dissemination of findings. Award recipients may be eligible to receive travel stipends to the annual DRC conference, where they will have an opportunity to present their work. Emerging Investigator Awards Program stipends are made directly to the scholar in the amount of $30,000.

Eligibility
Eligible applicants must be junior faculty at a U.S. institution of higher education (tenure-track appointment is not required). A letter from the chair of the applicant’s department or academic unit must confirm: 1) the applicant’s appointment; 2) the date of completion of the doctoral degree (i.e., within the 5-year timeframe); and 3) the Department’s support for the proposed research project. To be eligible for funding, the research proposed must be in areas consistent with the DRC themes (see http://www.mathematica-mpr.com/newsroom/releases/2012/DRC_8_12.asp). Proposed projects should be designed so that findings are available by the end of month 10, leaving 2 project months for preparation of manuscripts and other products. Priority will be given to projects using data from large data sets and/or nationally representative surveys, as well as those linking survey and administrative data or linking administrative data across state or federal agencies (e.g., disability, vocational rehabilitation, health care) to conduct studies with implications for disability policies. Emerging Investigator Award candidates are also encouraged to work on site at SSA’s Woodlawn, MD or Washington, DC offices, as appropriate. Funds may be used for a variety of purposes consistent with developing a broader research portfolio including buying out teaching time, supporting academic activities during summer breaks, hiring a research assistant or programmer, acquiring proprietary data, or covering travel and living expenses to spend an extended period of time at SSA.
