So, I'm going to be at Howard in the spring. I will be turning eighteen next month, until then, I have been relegated to working fast food jobs at entry-level positions. I have been trying so hard to get a job in retail, specifically at Ann Taylor, but a job, period, would do just as well. Do people usually hire in January in DC? How much is the usual minimum wage for fast-food? retail? Are there any jobs that I can apply for online, interview by phone, and start immediately after arriving? lol. Damn right, i'm desperate. Howard is draining me for my second year, even with a 3.7 cumulative. i don't know what to do.
I have worked retail before and they dont typically hire after the holidays because most people dont shop as much from about Jan-March. But hey, you never know...its worth a try.
Pentagon City Mall, Georgetown and Prince George's Plaza Mall are good places to start looking for jobs. Fast food is okay....i wouldnt do it if I were you unless the pay is comparable to retail and I doubt it is. Most retail jobs will pay between $8-9.50 depending on your experience. Starbucks pays pretty well also.
If those dont work out for you, try a temp agency. You just take a basic skills test, let them know your availability and most job assignments pay from $10 and up.
If possible, speak with Howard’s career center about obtaining a paid marketing internship. It will provide you with relevant work experience and build up your resume. DC is full of opportunities so you will be ok. For more information, check out the link below.

Thanks! Your information was very helpful. Especially since I've only been through Dc on my way to New Jersey (never had any money, lol). I've never visited Howard. I was going by reputation alone.
Ironically, I never visited Howard before I got there either. I went strictly based off reputation and what the Alumni and present students had to say about the school. I got better and personal info that way. I got to HU and ended up loving it!
