I was driving back from school today and just let my thoughts roam wherever they would, and i thought about this thing about "necessity being the mother of invention"
you know necessary things? right
then i flipped it
"invention is the mother of necessity"
how much we do that we feel is necessary that if never being invented we would know the damn difference?
new invention made, people see it and 'want it', then others do the same, then we begin to rely on this invention - another necessity is born.
just a thought
i REALLY feel you on this...
makes a WHOLE lot of sense...
case & point...the internet...
think about how everyone made out before the internet came along??
i mean, yeah...it is VERY convenient, efficient, etc. etc...but obviously...they got THIS far without it....
it wasn't until it actually came along...that those who for a LONG time had to do without it had something to compare it to....& really appreciate how helpful it is...
maaan.....that applies to so many things...
see, not everything belongs in the random comments thread...this was interesting to me...& i might not have caught it there...
I guess the people that free-posted my post does not have any intellect what so ever..
I hear you, 1LN63.
Let us look at what we consider *BASIC* necessities such as:
Electricity
The light bulb
Vehicles/public transportation
Refrigerators
Washing machine & dryer
All *necessities* this world has known for less than 250 years in any state similar to current use. How long has man/woman existed on this planet WITHOUT *basic* necessities?
How would y'all survive if there was a national power **** lasting 6 months?
How much more money would you have in your pocket today if you were not paying for non-essential items such as computers, Internet service, cell phones, car payments, gas, insurance, eating out, etc?
As new products are developed, demand for new products is created. For example, development of computers created demand for software, and eliminated demand for typewriters. Our needs are basically the same as they've always - to get around, get information, communicate, stay entertained, and stay safe. We just change the way we do it.
We spend a fixed amount of money on internet and phone service. Before these, people still needed to communicate, they just spent a fixed amount on stamps and telegrams. Technology allows us to do it more often out of convenience, so we can have the privilege of checking the weather on the other side of the country up to the minute from our phone. Not that we really need to, but simply because we can.
