that professional sports players get paid not only more than teachers (elementary through high school and most, if not all, college professors), but WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more than teachers?????
think it's fair that doctors, lawyers, etc. etc. get paid way more than teachers as well?????
when someone (i think a teacher) mentioned to me a few years ago how absolutely ludicrous it is that teachers get paid much less than people of these other professions, when the teacher is the one who taught them everything they KNOW about that profession in the FIRST place....i was like hmmmmmm...that is SO true...
but what do ya'll think?
i agree teachers are far more undervalued then any other profession. and you're right for they are the ones that plant the seeds for greatness some of them even harness what we all grow to become. In my opinion, teaching falls into that double standard. Just as women are undervalued, and teaching is a primarily woman profession they are both devalued. And for some reason in American society we dont cherish our educators as much as we should.
(i hope this makes sense, its been a long mornin)
nah gurl, i feel ya all tha way!

Its the same way with the press (media..tv news..radio..newspaper..whatever you wanna call it).
Journalists (and other media related professions) are sooooo underpaid and underappreciated.
A local news photographer can work 16 hours straight. No food. Minimal water. In sweltering heat...all to provide 2 or 3 minutes of good video and a few live shots for an hour's worth of a TV show. But the reporter gets the credit...the news anchor who read an intro to the story gets the credit...no mention of the photograper who had to go thru multiple white-balances....focusing through the macro lens...hauling pounds of gear around thousands and THOUSANDS of people who have NO CLUE AS TO WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON....but nobody mentions his name...you dont see his name at the bottom of the screen (i would say "supers" but none of you know what that is)...all for .....18-25K a year. Financial security isn't even in their vocabulary.
And I'm not even a news photographer. I just work in the same building that they do...they've explained how their job can be a gift and a curse at the same time....and i feel for them.
yeah, i feel for them too, but at the same thing...don't be too quick to speak so highly of the credit that reporters and writers receive....
once u get up there in the chain of media status...u're good....Peter Jennings...Barbara Walters....even ****....u're good...
but when u're just starting off on that latter...and depending how WHO u know....reporters/writers are very underpaid as well....especially in the beginning....and even years after, unless u have the hook-up, life ain't gonna be as good as it SHOULD be for the person giving the WORLD regular updates and information about its own goings-on as WELL as documenting HISTORY....
it's ridiculous...

I definitely think that ALL professional athletes are overpaid. I actually think its a damn shame that the people who do nothing to deserve all that money get the most. But whats even more shameful about that is WNBA plaqyers get the salary of everday people...They get paid around $50-60 a year..compared to their MALE counterparts who MILLIONSmore than them a year...and they both playing professional basketball. I mean I know the WNBA isnt on the same levelas the NBA as far as the amount of people who watch it, and endorsement of different NBA products, etc...but still...I think they do the women of basketball pretty dirty when comparing the salaries of men and women who play professional ball...
I definitely dont think docters and lawyers are overpaid...ESPECIALLY doctors. Hell, they go thru so many years of schooling and usually aint done by the time they about 30. And PLUS, they are in the business of SAVING LIVES...that deserves a HUGE salary in my opinion. The average STARTING salary for most doctors is around $200,000 a year, and it obviously increases with their years of experience...but overall I think thats fair. They have spent so much of their money in trying to learn how to save lives, I think its only right that they receive 6 figure salaries and plus...
As far as teachers...they are definitely underpaid...and thats sad cause they have one of the most important professions in the world. They have to continually educate the newer generation of children. Even professors are underpaid. I know at FAMU they are, like I said in another thread...my physical science professor for the spring said he isnt teaching lab cause FAMU dont pay him enough...and hell, I dont blame him.
mila...i DEFINITELY feel u on tha NBA-WNBA situation....AGREE AGREE...
but as for the doctor thing...i wasn't trying to imply that doctors are overpaid or should receive less...i DEFINITELY agree with you that they play a CRUCIAL role in the functioning of society...
they save lives, right...that's enough to get broke off a good one...
my whole thing is....it seems that teachers would receive at LEAST as much as doctors, if not, MORE....being that if it weren't for TEACHERS...the doctors wouldn't even know what they know or be the best at what they do, to begin with!
even lawyers...i think the fact that they make a significant amount is fair...but why don't teachers make as much?
or actually...even if most would argue that teachers shouldn't make as much as doctors or lawyers - they should at LEAST make MUCH more than they do...they REALLY get ripped off...considering THEIR crucial role in the functioning of society...
Athletes should get paid more than teachers. All the work they put it gotta pay off. All the training, dietin, muscle strain, mental strain. It gotta pay off somewhere
ATHELETES - These lucky **** take the cake. All that money...and they dont work a full 12 months?!?!? Damn shame. Why not spread the wealth to the real laborers like construction workers...mill workers...
Off season training is work. Playin 82+ games in about a 5 month period plus practice and training camp takes a toll on the body
Hell even high school football was a full year job

Now I gotta disgree with you there...I do agree that teachers are underpaid, and they should make alot more...BUT, I dont think their job is so significant where they deserve to make as much as doctors and definitely not more. I feel like elementary school teachers dont need to be making 200 g's a year...thats kinda outrageous. Especially when all they are teaching is ABC's and 123's....even that much at the high school level is too much in my opinion. And to make that much money and all you need is a 4 year degree ( in certain school districts )...and no graduate school wouldn't be fair. I think a fair STARTING salary for a teacher should be about $ 55 - 60 a year, compared to only $30,000. I also feel like if a teacher wants to make 6 figures off the bat then they should AT LEAST have a doctorate in education degree. I feel like you should pay those same dues as does lawyers and doctors to make their kinda money. Also tho...professors dont make good money at the UNDERGRADUATE level...but when they teach in law schools, and medical schools they are DEFINITELY making the big bucks there.
It is fair that they get paid more. They are in a field where they bring in hella more money than teachers. These players are bringing in millions, and millions, and some more million dollars to their employer. Are teachers doing that? Not necessarily. But I guess if someone is a type to look too much into things they will say "well these teachers teach people who bring in millions of dollars".
I am going to be a teacher, but I know damn well I should not be making more money than Michael Vick or Shaquille O'neil. Not saying I don't work as hard as they do, but they are the ones bringing in the money, so they deserve their "cut" of the money they help bring in. And their cut is a whole lot more than teachers

Do u not know how hard it is to teach ABC's and 123's? I did student teaching, I know that most students don't grasp ABC's and 123's very quickly. So we as teachers have to work very hard in that subject of ABC/123 very hard. And that is just the tip of the iceberg of what we have to teach. U still have georgraphy, putting sentences together, etc. And what they learn at this early age, normally makes or break them. If they can't read or know their numbers at an early age, then there is a good chance they will not really learn them in life. What students learn in elementary school is the foundation. W/o knowing ABC's, no reading. W/o knowing 123's, they will not be able to grasp algebra, geometry, etc when they get to middle and high school. Lets not just say "all they are learning is ABC's and 123's"

Aww, I rolled my eyes, poor Jamila. U want me to edit it and take them down or something? What do I need to do for u to not be mad at me? Huh?

I take that back...they DO work a full year....but they dont have to get paid as much as they do get paid. Inflation is a ****...but not when you're earning over 10x's what you spend.
