Hi everyone I have decided that I will attend HU in the fall. I was hoping to get to know a few people and learn more about life at the real HU. It would be great to know both the bad and the good. What will the dorms be like? If you recieved a scholarship do you live in a honors dorm? What is the biology program like? I would like to know everything. I would appreciate any help that anyone could possible give. You can post or e-mail me personally. I would love to find a friend who I could get to know prior to arriving to campus in August.
Holla @ ya girl
-Make copies of everything and get the names of anyone that advises you on something significant. This is how you hold people accountable and this is everyday common sense.
-It is a fashion show. Girls go to brunch in full make-up and stilettos. But it is very possible to "get a man" being natural you. Many girls at Howard wear lip gloss and sneakers and they are doing fine. Additionally, girls and guys here will spend $200 on jeans and thousands on homecoming outfits. But often, this is coming from their financial aid refund check. So don't fret over it or feel inferior. But on the flip side, do step your game up.
-There are stupid people. Coming from an academically challenging high school, I was surprised to see students playing on their cell phones in class, listening to their iPods in class, sleeping in the front row of class, openly disrespecting teachers, etc. And sometimes the classes can be a little simple. But if you find someone in your major to direct you on who to take and what to take, you should be fine.
-There is elitism. Basically, Howard is a like a big high school. There are the popular kids, rich kids, party animals, promiscuous girls, etc. If you want to be "somebody" at Howard, I advise you to hit the ground running. Get to know the people in the Power Hall (the hall in Blackburn where all the organization offices are), run for something, join clubs and organizations (though some are more prominent than other, PM me to know which ones), don't alienate people.
-The neighborhood. Its not that damn bad. And most of the time you're sheltered and on Howards campus. Just, um, stay away from locals. The **** rate in DC is ridiculously high, its not even logical. Practice common sense and you'll be fine.
-Social life. When you're a freshman your social life will initially revolve around the events that the Campus Pals put on the help you get acclimated. Then you'll develop floor unity and pride with your floormate. Hopefully you'll join some clubs and meet some people who share you interest. Beware of state clubs, you came to college to meet people from different places, not different streets in your city. You'll spend lots of time in the cafe and on weekends you will go to club parties. If you live in the Quad and its warm, you will chill on the **** wall outside of the Quad and wait for the boys from Drew to come bother you. If you live in the Annex you will chill in the Courtyard.
Your sophomore year you'll develop dorm unity (M-dot, The X, Slowe Hall Fam, etc.), spend lots of time in the PunchOut and go to house parties because club parties are (fresh-fest:full of freshmen). You will avoid any club party that had a shuttle leaving from the Quad. You'll probably be in some popular clubs and have someone that you mess around with on a consistent basis. You will consider changing your major but realize you're trying to graduate on time. You will either look forward to living in the Towers because you will have a kitchen or you will look forward to living off campus.
Um, can't think of anything else. But let me know if there's anything else you want to know.
Princess:
GREAT post and awesome new signature...I like.
Are you like way excited about fall or what?
Two of my high school girls are going to HU for the High school program this week. I am glad cause both said they did not want to mess with an all black college... That's why I pushed them to apply. I can't wait till they get back!
