Yalll not a real HBCU!!!!!!!!!!! yes its true General Samuel Armstrong!!! founded Hampton Institute and they are ashamed they stuck his statue in the basement of the building that they named after him. As we say in Norfolk "SORRY" that is "SORRY". Be proud of where you got your start. A confederate General.

I know that some HBCUs were founded by whites I just found it funny that HIU is one of them. lol i would have like to hope that people like Booker T would have started some of them, which up untill recently i thought he was the founder of HIU. I know he helped in some way. but who cares. lol
Fool... Hampton was founded on principles (besides blacks needing education) that Booker T. didn't advocate...
THANK YOU!!!! So many people get caught up in the name Booker T. Washington. A lot of people fail to realize that he felt blacks should be more agricultural meaning they should work with tier hands just like they did when they were slaves. I do believe Tuskegee was an agricultural school when he founded it.
Now hold on a mintue, you have to keep in mind that Hampton was also an agricultural and mechanical school. However, its main focus was on a classical education, so that students could do more than just operate machinery or farm implements. This would be your predecessor to the current engineering and technology department. What separates Hampton from the rest of the A&M schools is that these school didn't start bring focus on liberal arts until the beginning of the 20th century, whereas Hampton had that focus the whole time.
Oh yea, I know that. When Armstrong founded it we were called Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. They make sure we know the history of our school and everything. But thanks.

Clearly you care or else you wouldnt even start a thread about our school anyway.... And sad thing is you ACTUALLY thought that Booker T Washington was a founder of Hampton, but if you actually knew a little about history you would have already known that he was just a student at Hampton and that he started Tuskegee.... and besides why do you care so much about Hampton?? And spend so much time putting up stupid threads that just make you look dumber every single time??? And why wouldnt General Armstongs bust NOT be on the first floor of ARMSTONG hall?? I mean where do you want it to be...in Holland Gym?? .....ignorance is bliss

Clearly, you do not have the intelligence to attend any school. 1. You make a statement and have no evidence to back up what you are saying. 2. AFfter people that know their history confront you, you continue to perpetuate yoself by stating that you understand what ppl r tellin you, but u still continue to be a dumb a$$. 3. You honestly think that the Spartan Legion is more musical than our band? What the hell? Why am I wasting my time. You're too ignorant to participate in a meaningful debate. Oh, I could be wrong, but I don't think Armstrong was a confederate general (i'll get back to u, gotta find my uni 101 book).

actually he was a general of the Union army...not that it really matters...but before you attempt to downplay a school's legacy, know your facts...if he had the heart to start a school for African-Amercans and Native Americans, god bless his soul PS- If you're JUST figuring this out, that's a shame  college student...

Actually Booker T. modeled Tuskegee after Hampton. General Armstrong was Booker T.'s mentor and recommended him instead of a white man to lead Tuskegee. He and Booker T. advocated the same principles of manual labor and book knowledge. I'm glad that Armstrong was Hampton's founder. Without him, there would be no Tuskegee. Tuskegee's main science building is named after General Armstong.

That's what someone resorts to when they've realized their own ignorance. Who with reading comprehension and critical thinking abilities didn't know some HBCUs were founded by a whites? For some odd reason, he singles out Hampton like we have some grand conspiracy to hide that fact. As if we don't have buildings named after him and a couple of statues here on campus  Then he calls Armstrong a Conferderate General :? ::shakes head:: What's going on with the world today.
