In today’s world where everything will seemingly get harder before it gets any easier, people need to learn to work together. I am of a black mother and a Puerto Rican father and I feel it when I see people of my culture not striving for the best and wanting to fight and hate each other. In America Hispanics and blacks are the leading minorities, but they allow the word minority to devour them and live within their souls. Although they are different the can work together and grow to find similarities. Being a combined minority of black and Latino so much can be accomplished. If they decided to join hands, hearts, and minds they can begin to change so many issues whether it is dealing with politics or economics. If they join forces on political aspects the House of Representatives and Senate will have to see that the issue at hand is not only a concern to a specific kind of group. They would also recognize the unity and strive for excellence that is being shown and, especially if republican, would get more willingness to help since America works on a self reliance basis. Being a united entity would also bring about understanding among the cultures. There is beautiful history in African Americans that without opening your mind, one would not recognize. When a person is introduced and becomes familiar with a culture they can learn to appreciate them without so many preinstalled stereotypes. This, in turn, would help the schooling as the children learn to honor and most importantly respect the person that is not like them. When an African American can see that his Latino brother comes from a culture of color and dance there could not be so much instability. In order to strengthen our communities, especially where blacks and Hispanics live among each other like in New York and Atlanta, Hispanics must realize that all male black men are not “thugs”. There is beauty in the skin colors and many Hispanics have African ancestry. They must realize that many of their cultural habits have derived straight from the rhythms of Africa. I am currently in school to become a Spanish teacher. In being a Spanish teacher we must learn to teach history, culture, and art as well as language structure. Allowing the culture of Hispanics to be brought to the brim of a students mind and collected would bring about a great knowing of the other race, and knowing is said to be only half the battle. Historically Black Colleges should continue to bring the rich African American culture to life in the minds of the students. Bringing in a number of Latinos would be a wonderful idea in itself. After high school many students venture off to college in hopes for a brighter and more prosperous life. Many of the friends you meet and keep are those that were met while in college. In my experience with blacks and Latinos together, blacks have been more accepting of the Hispanic culture than any other race on average and visa versa. Allowing them to live together and attend a place that or many starts the ripple of the rest f their lives, is definitely needed. College brings a sense of family and what better place to bring people of different ethnic backgrounds together than such a place as this. There are so many so many good reasons why Hispanics and African Americans should come together. They are alike in as many ways as they are different. The entire aspect of uniting is understanding. In order to accept something you must first understand it. Joining together they could change politics, communications, and their entire communities. It would be a powerful move and I can not wait to be apart of it.
