“African-American and Hispanic Unity”
Essay Contest By: Jessica Nixon
The unified front of the African-American and Hispanic cultures working together as minorities in the U.S. will overcome the issues that each ethnicity faces individually. Building a strong foundation of acceptance of each other will lead to a more effective and successful approach when dealing with the political, cultural, communicative, and community issues. Within the political realm, most of the laws, rules and regulations are directed toward minorities as a unified group. By collaborating efforts toward a common goal, the minority groups will accomplish more. It seems as if the more voices heard, the louder the message is being sent to those it may pertain. By cooperating together, the African-American and Hispanic cultures can help people understand their heritage and the important roles they play in their everyday lives. Whether it is the distribution of responsibility, dependability, respect, family-orientation, education, religion, or language expectations; the more everyone works together to explain that importance, the better others will be able to understand and respect those differences amongst all the various minority groups. Developing those qualities will help all those involved, including the majority and minority of Americans. Communicating these thoughts and ideas is the main obstacle between any culture. Through the vast amount of communication that we seek and utilize everyday, we still are limited to how well we can communicate. If the African-American and Hispanic cultures were able to work together and be willing to share the importance of how to communicate with their own culture as well as other cultures, it will help to overcome stereotypes and racial ethnic profiling. Developing a community that does not have such profiling is another barrier that must be faced. Community is such an important concern for members of both minority groups and unifying communities across the board of all ethnical groups would be beneficial for everyone. It is a very different approach to the aspect of community from the African-American and Hispanic cultures as it is from the majority of Americans in the U.S. It is very important to have a strong sense of community around the family structure for support, protection, and unity. Many people in today’s society do not understand that aspect and resent those who reach out to help and who show concern, but maybe we need more of that help and concern for one another. By working together, the African-American and Hispanic cultures can pull together to build strong communities for themselves and teach others how to appreciate the feeling of security and satisfaction by developing a balance and diversity around themselves. In order to strengthen the relationship between the African-American and Hispanic communities among others, commonalities would need to be found. Once the foundation is established between the two ethnicity groups, it would help to bring them together for the common goal of defining their strengths and instigating changes within the political, cultural, communicative, and community issues that they face everyday. Together they can help others to better understand their concerns, issues, and fears and develop a optimistic approach to cooperate with all ethnic groups. Offering scholarships and developing support group facilities would greatly encourage diversity among the needs of African-American Students and of the growing Hispanic (and Afro-Hispanic) population in the United States. Through this new perspective of diversity that will be shared of the African-American and Hispanic cultures, changes will be evident within our homes, residencies, communities, corporations, organizations, and in our government. Unity amongst all is the key.
