The cooperation between the African American and Hispanic communities is necessary component not only for their mutual advancement in the world but also for their survival. Though more optimistic people would believe otherwise the United States of America is still a country whose social economic situation is still sadly dominated by racism. It’s a world were the minorities have an invisible weight placed on them to hold them down, a world were minorities are born with the disadvantage that there families were never part of the higher echelon that is middle or higher class America and all the benefits that come with a paycheck higher than minimum wage. Though the chains of oppression are no longer visible that does not mean that they no longer exist. When minorities are put into a race that they seemingly lost before they even began, that is when the African American and Hispanic communities have to pull their resources together and overcome not as two different people but as one nation. There has not always been the strongest of ties between the African American and Hispanic communities, which is what some people would say. Some people might even claim that they come from to completely different worlds. But one needs to consider the history behind these two people and you will see some very strong similarities that can form the foundation of strong bonds. Both minorities had their start in countries conquered by foreign western powers. Africa had been invaded, carved up, and had its people subjugated for a profit. Either for ivory, rubber, diamonds, or cheap labor Africa has always been exploited. Latin countries like Nicaragua, Mexico, and Venezuela have always been the **** of America’s more imperialistic tendencies. From manifest destiny inspired filibusters like William Walker to the Mexican American War the Latin world seems to be always threatened by the adherents of western dominance. Transported to the United States both peoples have suffered their own forms of slavery and thankless work. Both have toiled in the fields of white farmers. Both have had to deal with the constant threats of poverty and homelessness. Both have been victims of cruel prejudices. And both have been locked in the economic and social death trap that is the ghetto, a place that is more like a prison than a place of residence. Both have also had great leaders like Malcolm X and Cesar Chaves that they have rallied behind and also similar movements like Black and Chicano movements during the sixties and seventies. Both communities have shared a long history of being segregated, used, and hated. It is in these common bonds that both groups can unite. To do this we most educate not only are young but all those who know nothing of these similarities. By doing this we will be able to form the common ground that both communities can walk on together. With both peoples united they can accomplish much but in these modern times aid is always in need. That is why we needHistorically Black College & Universities to provide the necessary help to not only the African community but also the Hispanic community in order for the betterment of these to races to continue.
