African American and Hispanic Unity Essay Posted on 04-18-2007

Even though African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans seem to be so different from each other, we do have one big similarity: we are both considered minorities in the country we live in, and we are often a target in the white man’s eyes. Instead of working together to put an end to the outrageous convictions of our people, we decide to fight and work against each other. I believe that this will only make things worse for us. The white man believes that we are **** animals, and the way we act towards each other is just clarifying their point. I believe that African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans should work together to address political, cultural, communication, and community issues because we left it up to the U.S. government to address these issues, but they haven’t done much to solve them. Being that it’s our communities that are being affected, I think that it would be only right that we take the initiative to help ourselves. For example, **** Katrina left many African-Americans homeless in New Orleans and they called on the government to rescue them. But, it took them about 5 days after the disaster to show up. This goes to show us that we can’t even rely on our government to keep us safe, which is their job. So, we need to take matters in our communities in our hands. Well, I must admit I don’t know what exactly can be done to “peace it up” between the two populations, but I do have an idea of how we can find out. I think within each community, the African-Americans and the Hispanic-Americans should have a big meeting and discuss the issue and once we have opinions from both populations, we can discuss how to solve them. I currently reside in a city that is mostly African-American and Hispanic-American populated, and one of the issues that the African-American population may have with the Hispanic-Americans is the lack of employment, because all of the Hispanic-Americans own all of the businesses and take all of the petty jobs. Plus, the Hispanic-Americans are afraid of the African-Americans so that makes them not want to hire them. I think that HBCU’s should continue to support African-American students as well as Hispanic-American students because in the future, if the HBCU’s need a favor, the Hispanic-American alumni will remember what they did for them. Besides, even though HBCU’s are specifically for African-Americans, I feel that we should still help out all minorities that are seeking success in the U.S. If we don’t do that, we wouldn’t be any better than the government that is supposed to be helping us. I’m not only promoting working with Hispanic-Americans, although they are the ones whose situation is closest related to ours. I think in order to “peace it up”, one of the parties need to do something good for the other party. But, that is a difficult situation because usually none of the parties want to be generous to the other party first, this makes them feel submissive. But, I really don’t care about that, so why can’t the African-Americans be the generous ones?
