Although the United States has grown away from segregation and hatred towards African Americans and Hispanics, they still are not involved as much as I would like them to be in leadership positions. As separate minority groups, it would make sense for the two to join and make one big group. Two is always more than one.
Having historically black colleges are a good way of keeping a race proud of who they are and where they came from. The fact that they help students in need of financial aid by giving free money through grants and scholarships to those who apply themselves academically, push many to work harder and give hope for a better future. I think that minority scholarships are done for the simple reason to help minorities rise above by becoming better educated. Somebody who works hard to get good grades and has the enthusiasm to excel may be discouraged when they realize that their family (due to immigration or no education) can not afford their college expenses. But when scholarships are encouraging people like this to go to college by offering free money, it is not only helping that one person, but all surrounding him who realize that it can be done.
African American and Hispanic communities are involved with themselves by family, but are separated by culture. The main distance between the two is the fear of mixing their race. A culture and background is always hard to keep alive if it is not practiced on a regular basis. As a Hispanic who’s parents came from Latin American countries, I am very proud of how successful and how far they have come due to hard work. Yet in some similarity, this is also how African Americans must feel considering how far they have come from their ancestors who were forced in slavery. Instead of having just a “Historically Black College,” why not integrate races and have a “minority college” for every minority, not necessarily just African Americans. When people realize that there are different racial groups with similar struggles, they will begin to help each other out. Thus creating an even stronger minority group.
I think people of all races should take pride in integration, because it shows a sign of tolerance. For example; the only type of President this country has ever had is a white male. Does this portray an image of dominating races and toleration of other races? Or is the white male just the type of person people feel safe following?
The Framers of the Constitution meant for the leader of the United States to be an American with pride for his country who will protect his people and defend the Constitution. Although minorities cherish where they came from, they also value where they are at and take pride of being a U.S. citizen. Barack Obama does not fear losing his candidacy for President, on the other hand, because he is African American, it makes him bold for even attempting to try to hold that position.
With an education, one will succeed because he is well informed of all his opportunities. If all minorities would realize this, and help each other out instead of separating and staying in their groups, then hatred would disappear, because everyone would have good jobs and money would not be an issue. Thus, making people happier about the life they have, a country they can be proud of, and be more humbled by where they have come from and how hard they worked to get where they are.
