Stevenson Moseleyoutcast2society@yahoo.comAs minorities African Americans and Hispanics still have many checkpoints to pass in our American society. Checkpoints that have not been passed due to discrimination and in addition for African Americans slavery. With all the problems we face today we must unite and work together because numbers is power. The vote is power. The Hispanic minority is projected to no longer be a minority but the majority. Be we must all understand that we must vote and not be discouraged or lazy. Some people say that their one vote does not matter. They take it for granted. However they forget that the right to vote for minorities was something that was paid for with blood and effort. And as one of my history teachers said “If you don't vote, how can you complain or criticize the government and its policies?". If you think about it he is right. I live in New York a classified blue state but that is not going to stop me from voting and believing that my vote counted for something. There are differences in opinion within a party even in classified blue or red states. When the minority voting block becomes even more powerful the minority needs will be addressed but that will only happen when African Americans and Hispanics cooperate. There must not be conflict between us because we are all on the same boat. For the relationship between African Americans and Hispanics to strengthen we must understand and appreciate our similarities and differences. We must get rid of the ignorance that is a petty, poisonous, dividing fog. It all begins with the youth. The youth is the future and that is not some saying that holds no meaning. It holds plenty of meaning and truth. Kids are blocks of clay that are molded by their surroundings and other influences. They must have decent influences at home and outside of home. And since kids spend most of their young years and teen years at school they must have a dynamic education and a decent school to go to. Deep in the city you wouldn't find much of that. Most of these schools that have a majority of minority students forget these students. Historically Black colleges and Universities should not forget these students. As a minority myself I know hardship and I know others have and face hardship. My mother is a single working parent while my father is disabled. This and other things have made higher education for me a big financial problem. Just about a month ago deposits for tuition and housing was due and it was very hard for my mother to find the money to pay for it. I am writing this essay due to my hardship. But it has made me stronger and I will keep on writing essays because I will not let my potential down. And because of these hardships to be supported for higher education by historically black universities and scholarships are key and a needed financial support for minority students. These sources should be supported by the Federal Government considering all the pork barreling they have and it should be supported by donations from successful minorities like Oprah Winfrey or other people from other races like Bill Clinton who themselves would most likely understand what minority youngsters go through and their needs. As the two main minority groups in the country there is little reason for division and great reason for unification. "United we stand, divided we fall".
