My name is Brittany Danielle Wheeler and I am a seventeen-year-old African-American female. I am currently attending John F. Kennedy High School as a senior. I am also a little sister for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. I have two siblings. I have an older sister (21) her name is Shenice Caldwell and a younger brother (7) his name is Christopher Jamar Flowers. I come from a family where my biological father was absent. My father was in jail for 10 years, when he got out of jail I saw him twice since his release. I am now seventeen and my father has not attempted to get in contact with me. I am now at the point of my life when I am longing for my real father’s attention. My mother is a sweet and loving person. Her name is Orethea Flowers. My mother is recently recovering from a serious illness; she was on disability for about two years. My mother had very severe migraines that caused her to suffer very painful sensations in her head. Due to the migraine headaches caused her body to feel as if it was under extreme amount of pain. She has recently started working part-time for UCLA Hospital as a nurse, and trying to go back to school to get a B.S. degree. I believe that school is the key to my success. I did not really believe it at first because I was so young. Now that I am in high school and a senior, I realize the importance of school education. I look back at my previous grades in school and noticed that they were not what they could have been. I am willing to put everything else aside and focus 100% on school. I feel that school is the one thing that I have control over. I want to be able to take care of my mother in case she becomes ill again. My short-term goals are to raise my grades and to make school a major part of my life. I plan to achieve my goal by doing anything possible to study and focus in school. Education is very important to me and it will soon show in my grades. My long- term goals are to continue and further my education. I would like to receive a bachelor degree in mathematics and a PH.D from UNLV. I want to become an Aerospace Engineer. To achieve my goal of being an Engineer, I plan to use my wonderful Algebra and Math skills. Math is one of the subjects that I really understand and want to further my education in. I also would like to get a degree in Microbiology. My vision of myself five years ago is different from the way I see myself now. I was a very quiet person who really didn’t like to speak unless it was necessary. I was not a social person. I took to the same friends for a while. I was not willing to make new friends due to the fear of rejection. I am now concerned with my future and what I will become in life. There are no playing games when something has to do with my future. Two major activities that I believe one should consist of are devotion and community service. There are not many people out there who are dedicated to school or any activities. I am devoted to any duty that I have been given, earned, or obligated to do. I love giving back to the community; it is a delighted thing to do. The community benefits from any volunteer services that have been done. The most important thing to a university is attendance and showing leadership on campus. I am a very outgoing and friendly person. I believe"African American & Hispanic Unity" would give me the opportunity to further my education. If I were accepted I would take full advantage of challenges and would be very grateful. I heard about "African American & Hispanic Unity" through my sister. She stated how “This would be a once in a life time opportunity”. I am excited about the possibility of having the opportunity to be able to have help paying for college. Thank you in advance for considering me as a candidate for this scholarship.
