1. Why should African Americans and Hispanics in the United States work together as minorities to address political, cultural, communication, and community issues?2. What can be done to strengthen the relationship between the African American and Hispanic communities living within the United States?3. How and why should Historically Black College & Universities continue to support the needs of African American Students and possibly the needs of the growing Hispanic (and afro-Hispanic) population in the United States? It was once stated that it was necessary to either work together or die alone, and although the quote refers to the unification of states, the words strike true in many other instances, including that of the cooperation between African Americans and Hispanics in the United States. Both are groups struggling through the same battles of political, cultural, communication and community issues as minorities in the United States.By joining together and combining resources, the two groups should be able to put forth a stronger front that can only be beneficial to their cause. This strength is not only visible in the number of people involved but by the range of the newly unified group. Without banding together, the two groups would be limiting targeted areas to where their people reside, leaving many residential pockets unaffected by any actions taken. With a joint effort these unaffected pockets would not remain so as any member of either group would be affected by any action taken. This creates widespread reform and quickens the process of achieving full equality nationwide.United, the two groups can prove to the nation that they are truly looking for equality. In a society that is often labeled as superficial, it is not hard to imagine a group of people claiming to seek equality while in reality merely attempting to find a way to better themselves above all others. Combining strengths with another minority faction, the two groups are publicly displaying that they are truly searching for a common goal, and the only way to have equality for one is to have equality for all. Ideally, as this occurs, those who are not facing the issues that African Americans and Hispanics face. may then assist in the battle as well. This will happen when we all want an American society that has members who are reaching for ideal goals such as true equality and equal rights. By helping the joint minority group achieve this goal, they are in turn helping America achieve this goal. Then, the group can expand. When other minority groups witness this collaboration, they, too, will want to join to strengthen the group even more. It is this type of cooperation that leads to a resolution of issues that the groups face. For all this to happen, however, a relationship must exist between the two. Because both communities are fighting for the same results, a beginning relationship already exists, but now commitment is required is to make the relationship strong. One way to strengthen the relationship between the communities is to promote the idea of one large community fighting for the equality of all minorities, not two communities fighting for two equalities. This can be achieved by having people running for political offices with slogans that do not cater to a single minority in a single area but rather to all minorities. It also requires organizations and communities to abandon closed door policies and rather be welcoming to all minorities. All of this will be meaningless, however, if the people of the minority communities themselves do no want it. To be truly successful, with a strong relationship between African Americans and Hispanics, the communities must abandon the self serving attitude that they are the only ones facing issues in America. When they have succeeded in this, they can then truly hear the message of those pushing for equality for all and assist in bringing them into power where a difference can be made on a grand scale. How? One suggestion is to gain intelligence, and although this can be accomplished in multiple ways, a common answer is through education. Devoted to expanding the mind, college provides a perfect path of education that ends in eliminating ignorance. Historically Black colleges and universities should continue to support the needs of African American Students. By doing so, they are working toward educating a portion of American society, a goal that will always be beneficial to America as a whole. Furthering this mission, the colleges and universities must continuously target potential students for the chance at obtaining a college degree. Although it can be difficult to promote this to many young adults in the Black and Hispanic communities, it is crucial that we change their attitude regarding this. In today’s American society, success often comes with a prerequisite of having a college degree. By teaching the Black community and educating them about the ability to earn a degree, the idea that equality is possible for their minority community is reaffirmed. The colleges and universities should likewise support the needs of the Hispanic and Afro-Hispanic communities. By doing so, the colleges and universities are supporting a reciprocal relationship, promoting the philosophy of working together, allowing students to learn of other minority issues, and assisting in creating personal bonds between the communities. This strengthening of the relationship will be valuable for the two groups in working together to address the issues that both face.It is never sensible to attempt to face a problem alone, especially when there is a potential partner who is facing the same problem. By joining together a new body is created that is stronger than either group would be alone. For these reasons the African American and Hispanic communities should join together in their search for equality and resolution of political, cultural, communication, and community issues. By continuing the education of the Black community through colleges and universities, as well as the Hispanic community, ignorance can be destroyed so that all can see the wisdom in a union. With a similar goal the relations between the communities can be strengthened and this stronger union will lead to a stronger voice when calling for equality. Just as the states joined together to form a free nation, so too will the communities joining together lead to an equal America.
