In America, African Americans and Hispanics are both considered minorities. Both ethnic groups together can account for less than half of the United States population today. It is evident that in this current demographic state the only chance that African Americans or Hispanics have to make an impact is as a single entity. A majority of the population is Caucasian and has not in recent years been directly affected by inequality in the United States. Struggles with inequality in some way, shape or form influence the way that minorities think and act. As much as African Americans and Hispanics would like to think that what we dream is possible, there are people in the United States that still have prejudices and discriminate against minorities. This is something that is never going to go away. How many people are really as open minded as they say? They will let their children play with the little brown child down the street. However, do not grow up and want to marry their son or daughter. It is 2007 not 1970. African Americans and Hispanics can address political, cultural, communication, community issue or any other issue for that matter in this country together. It would be more strength in numbers. Before African Americans and Hispanics can exemplify unity, they must work on their relationship. They must become like brother and sister. Siblings with good relationships take the time to understand one another. They get know each others strengths and weaknesses. This is exactly what needs to take place. I think that it would be a good idea for an understanding of the others cultural traditions, and issues within the respective communities. It is a great way to begin to relate based on familiarity and commonality. I am sure that what will be discovered is that the same things are desired. I think that this can be done through community events that celebrate both cultures are the same time. Individuals will be able to experience what makes each ethnic group unique. I also feel that campaigning for like issues together and supporting the other in public is great way to meet people. Meeting a person is the first step in any relationship. Also, working together forms the bond of teamwork. This is what we want. The effort to make change is a team effort. It should not be about “I,” individual desires. Time on this earth for one person is short. It is too short to be selfish. I do not live in America by myself and neither does anyone else. How far would the Civil Rights movement have gotten if other people outside the African American ethnic group did not care? Not that far. Historically Black College & Universities are important because they demonstrate how far this nation has come in acceptance. The fact that historical black educational institutions exist today serve as a model for what African Americans can achieve. Look how many successful African Americans have come from historically black institutions. They emerge with a good education and strong sense of self. I think that Hispanic American could benefit from an environment like the historically black institution. They will be able to start on a level playing field and be less apt to compare themselves to the majority. They would be able to focus more on personal development and self preservation in a world that grows seemingly more chaotic by the second.
