African American & Hispanic Unity" Essay Submission Posted on 05-31-2007

African Americans and Hispanics have been politically and culturally discriminated against for many years in the United States. African Americans and Hispanics also have populated much of the United States. If we spent less time fighting against each other and pointing fingers and put more time in working together, we could really make a difference. I see it every day and I hear it everyday. The constant well your people are always on welfare and having kids and your people are the ones in jail and always robbing folks. This constant blaming isn’t getting either of us anywhere. In fact we are losing. Sadly racism is still a huge issue in the United States. During my time at a public school in California, Mexican-Black riots broke out every year. There had to be Police involvement to try and control the two groups and then we wonder why we are discriminated against. The United States is a country of opportunity and we should take the opportunity to work together and gain the political and culture respect that we deserve just as any other American citizen has the right to. Both Hispanics and African Americans face the same community issues. If Hispanics and African Americans came together we could help strengthen the community. I don’t believe total integration would strengthen the relationships between African Americans and Hispanic communities. I do however believe that by starting off with respect, understanding and communicating the power of unity through churches and schools well help the relationship between African Americans and Hispanic Americans. Many Africans are now afro-Hispanic and that is why historically Black College & Universities should continue to support the need of not only African American students but of also Afro-Hispanics and Hispanics. Many blacks are Hispanic and come from Spanish speaking countries. Having Black Colleges and Universities support Hispanics would be a huge and positive step in strengthening the relationships between the two.
