Unity is the Key to Success Posted on 05-31-2007

Sadae Williams Undergraduate- Sophomore 2007 Fordham University Unity is the number one method that when it is used or misused the world can either be affected positively or negatively. When used to promote the positive aspects unity can develop into an evolution. It can change the many prejudices or racisms that greatly affect the relationships that we as a people could have developed if it weren’t for the mindset that many of us behold. When unity is misused relationships within a group can still be considered unified. However, the relationships may be with people of the same origin, traditions, etc. Some people withstand their boundaries and do not move outside of the box. This is when unity is misused. African Americans and Hispanics, two distinctive groups whom are not properly unified, are a prime example of misused unification. We as African Americans and Hispanics should not have any sorts of animosity amongst each other. We share the same history. We share the same pain and suffering as minorities. As minorities we should come together and work together developing the many ways we can relieve ourselves of the label “minority” and just be considered human beings. By working together we can address the many political issues like unequal opportunities we hold due to the color of our skin. We are fighting against each other so excessively that we fail to realize that we are fighting the wrong people. Our enemies are not ourselves yet our enemies are the people that are against us. The ones whom want us to fail and are pleased when they see us do so. Our enemies are the ones whom prey on our failure and by us fighting each other we are making a mockery of ourselves. We are not working together like the “others” least expect us to. By fighting we are losing the many morals and traditions that we have learned, “love one another”. By not communicating our communities are becoming entrapped with gangs causing **** and we are killing each other. If there was more communication within our neighborhoods then we as a people would not become nearly extinct due to our own wrongdoings. We are failing. However we must and shall prevail. We can conduct clubs, special companies, where we can hold meetings to communicate with each other. As a first step we can talk about the many emotions in which everyone may feel about one another. Secondly, we can talk about the many issues we have as a minority and what ways we can distinguish ourselves to make a difference in the world. Our communities must become unified by involving yourself. Cleaning the neighborhood, joining a nearby center, having picnics and celebrations to express our happiness and bury our hardships. Historical Black Colleges and Universities are the main sources in which uphold our legacy and what is left of it. Without their support of the African Americans and Hispanics some of our college students in the past, present, and future would most likely not be the person they are today. The colleges and universities they will or have attended has made an impact on their lives by continuing to remind them of their culture and credit them by helping them to receive scholarships due to the many hardships a minority would receive when not eligible for certain rewards. If we lose the main support system in which we have upheld for many years what is left of our foundation may crumble. We need all the support we can get to maintain stability. There is never too much support, but there is always never enough.
