African American & Hispanic Unity Posted on 05-31-2007
Bionca

There are many issues that led me to writing this piece today. And there are many things that inspired me to help me write this. First allow me to introduce myself. My name is Bionca Christa Kilgore. I am 17 years old and I am a senior at Kearsley High School in Flint, MI. I have been an honors student all of my years in school, always standing out in my class in some kind of way, but in the end, not getting recognized for it. This is where my story begins. Since the beginning of my senior year, I have wanted to get things done on time and out of the way. I am not the type of person who likes to procrastinate. First allow me to say that I am African American and I go to a school of all white people. This is why high school has always been hard for me. I have never fit in with the Caucasian students. They always stereotyped me and thought I was weird. I have been going to an all white school since sixth grade. It has not been a great experience for me at all. I realized how much affirmative action effected me when I attended my honors convocation at my school recently. There were over 30 scholarships available. I applied to them of course because I met the criteria. The one thing I failed to realize is that part of the criteria was probably that you have to be Caucasian! I was crushed to find out that I did not win any scholarships from my school. I sat there for two and a half hours. And yes, I was ungrateful for not winning anything. I also had over a hundred hours of service learning and I did not receive my cords for that. At the end of the ceremony, I noticed that my Hispanic friends did not get any scholarships either. Keep in mind that we were honors students! The Caucasian kids ended up getting more than one per person and we got.... NONE! What is my point you are probably wondering? Hispanics and African Americans need to work together to get their equal rights because they are well deserved. I feel that it is terrible that racism still occurs. We need to unite as one and become strong enough to fight for a cause. There are things that need to be done about the things going on in our schools. Hispanics and African Americans need to become better friends by doing projects to raise money for scholarships like this. This will help show understanding between different races and make people believe in us more. A problem that I found with HBCU's is that they are not affordable at all. Especially if you plan on attending a good one. I plan on attending Clark Atlanta University in the fall and my parents have no idea where all of the money is going to come from. Financial Aid seems to not understand that my family needs money! :o I think HBCU's could lower tuition or make more scholarships available for students and give them to the ones that actually need them. Like I said before, I will be attending Clark Atlanta University in the fall and I will be majoring in Marketing. I plan to be very successful in my future. All I need is a financial push and my hard work and dedication will take me the rest of the way. Thank you for your time and I hope you will consider me as a winner of this scholarship.
