There is power in numbers. Separated, African Americans and Hispanics remain a minority that lives in primarily Caucasian society. When the numbers are few, the concern is proportional to the number of those who care to make a difference. African Americans and Hispanics have similar issues yet choose to divide themselves across a cultural line, which only hurts them in the long run. When Hispanics and African Americans join forces together, their voices will be heard. The issues are similar. Both nationalities want better education for their children and better housing conditions. Certain problems do not require reference to culture.I believe that African Americans and Hispanics need to realize that they should not divide themselves by culture. In America, culture is secondary to the fact that they are minorities. Instead of pointing out the differences, we should find and forge bonds over the common ground. In this way, the relationship between the Hispanic and African American communities living within the United States can be strengthened. Bringing African Americans and Hispanics in efforts beyond music give way to find similar struggles and victories. The original purpose of Historically Black College and Universities was to provide a nurturing educational environment for African American students because they could not attend the white schools. Historically Black Colleges and Universities continue to provide a positive example for African American students. Now, Hispanic students and Afro-Hispanic students need the same stable foundation. As a race, African Americans should understand the struggles that come with discrimination and encourage Hispanics to join the educational process available at a historically black college. If Hispanic and Afro-Hispanics begin applying and entering Historically Black Colleges and Universities then the curriculum will need to address their history to build up the students to be proud. The purpose of this venture is to allow the student to be in the majority and gain leadership skills. When the African American and Hispanics join together, it must be in an equal manner that allows for the positive development of both parties.
