United States citizens are both multi-ethnic and multi-cultural. The principles of the constitution set the standard for such a diverse society. The democracy in America liberates its’ citizens by allowing freedom of choice, speech, and religion. However, certain political platforms favor certain groups of people and exclude others. African-Americans and Hispanics are both minorities that encounter political and cultural barriers in mainstream America. This is due to a lack of representation in positions of leadership. In order to appropriately address political, cultural, communication, and community issues minority populations must work together in the United States. The African-American experience in the United States is one of tragedy and encouragement. To date the African-American has been the only group of people brought to this country against their will and enslaved to provide free labor. The very act of slavery went against the United States constitution, but it was allowed until the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. After freedom was declared African- Americans endured the set backs of segregation, discrimination, and racism. Without the right to vote the concerns of the African-American was not heard. Once the Fifteenth Amendment was declared African-Americans voted for the candidate who identified most with their concerns. Even today there is a lack of balance in leadership which facilitates the imbalance in minority advancement. In order for African-American advancement to occur the community must establish an environment that will perpetuate diligence and a strong sense of purpose. The Hispanic experience signifies one of advancement. Many Hispanics come to the United States to make a better life. Hispanics have established themselves and are increasingly becoming the largest minority population in the U.S. It had already been predicted that Hispanics would take the place of African-Americans as the largest minority in the U.S. Hispanics face a lack of balance in leadership and are often discriminated against due to language barriers. In order for Hispanics to advance they must increase their participation in political elections and continue to overcome communication issues. African Americans and Hispanics experience many of the same challenges. Ultimately, the imbalance of power and a nonexistent bond between African Americans and Hispanics is the cause of the current state of the minority in America. If there is an alliance formed between Hispanics and African- Americans progress will be made. Minority populations must respect each others differences and concerns to strengthen their relationship. Once differences in cultures are embraced progress can be made. The organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and Latin American Association (LAA) that speak on behalf of minority populations on a national level must have open dialogue. This is the type of alliance that would undoubtedly take the concerns of the minority populations to elected officials to evoke positive change. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) play a pivotal role in the African- American community. African- American students have to be educated and prepared to handle certain challenges in life. Without the existence of the (HBCU) many of our African-American youth would not have the opportunity to attain a college education. (HBCU’s) not only support current students, but through community outreach both younger and older individuals feel the presence of the institutions. Due to the amount of responsibilities the HBCU fills it is imperative that they receive adequate funding on an annual basis. Funding and resources make it possible for schools to continue with their mission and purpose of preparing students to compete in a global society. HBCU’s should embrace the growing Hispanic population because they have an understanding of struggle. Additionally, they are minorities in the United States just seeking the chance to succeed. If there are resources available to make someone or some group of people better then it ought to be done. Once the concerns of minorities are seriously considered by America’s leadership and changes are made the future of the United States of America will greatly improve.
