"African American & Hispanic Unity" Posted on 06-01-2007

Being that I am an African American female living here in the United States and most of my neighbors are Hispanic, I think African Americans and Hispanics should work together. As minorities African Americans and Hispanics have very similar issues. These issues include those within politics, culture, communication, and community. Working together to help their children get better educated and become successful, productive citizens can effectively change these issues. The political issues within these minority races are that not enough of the people get involved. Political disenfranchisement is big issue. Many people don’t vote at all because they feel that their vote do not count. Some people don’t vote because during the campaigning for political office what is promised is never followed through on. Candidates talk about what they are going to do to help employment, education, healthcare, and welfare in the minority areas, but once these candidates gain office little or nothing is done. The more African Americans and Hispanics in politics the greater the chance for change. There are many issues withing the African American and Hispanic community. Increasing crime rates is one of the major community issues. **** is the leading cause of death among young black men because of gangs and criminal networks. African Americans and Hispanics are also given longer and tougher punishment for some of the same crimes committed by Caucasians. If they became more erudite within the law profession, they can make small shifts in the judicial system and the community. Becoming more unified as a community could minimize the crime in the urban areas and would help save lives. It may not seem as though African Americans and Hispanics have similar cultures. However, music, dance and art are major parts of both cultures. One cannot ignore the passion that is expressed through these mediums. These minorities must work together to help others to understand that although the art has evolved, it still holds the base of their culture. Communication is the way we convey ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Without proper communication skills much can be misconstrued. It is a lot harder for Hispanics than African Americans to communicate, because most of Hispanics do not speak English. The majority of Hispanics do not speak English and 25% of those that do, do not speak English fluently. Not knowing the English language makes it hard for them to advance at jobs or obtain proper training. African Americans can speak English and be understood, however, there are not enough discussion and communication about important issues to actually make a difference. Hispanics and African Americans both have communication issues, but of different kinds. "Two heads are better than one" is a very valid phrase. African Americans and Hispanics should work together to address issues on politics, culture, communication, and community here in the United States. These issues aren’t going to get any better if they don’t work together. Other cultures are concerned with their issues and do very little to address the issues within the African American and Hispanic communities. The more people fighting for the same issues the more likely the issues can be emended. As an African American I will strive to influence my people and fellow minorities to do what they can to help. I will do my part by being a proud voter, volunteering in my community, and expressing myself through the art of dance communicating my culture to others.
