Cassandra Downes June 1st, 2007 “African-American and Hispanic Unity” In today’s society, as well as in the past, minorities have been looked down upon and deprived of having many equal opportunities that the more privileged members of society may posses. Members of this disadvantaged class, include individuals belonging to the African-American race, and the Hispanic race. Over time progress has been made in order to rectify this situation, but there still seems to be matters and affairs that have not been made right. There are many issues that need to be addressed and there is still much division and confusion among the people, which leads to complaints being made that a better life is needed in the minority community, but in order to accomplish this, change is a must. One of the most prevalent problems that exist among this community is that there is a very important factor that is missing, and that is unity. The people yearn to find a solution to all of their problems but fail to realize that much disagreements and a lack of togetherness will only result in chaos and non-productiveness. If the African-Americans and the Hispanics within the United States would only come together they would result in becoming a force to be reckoned with. The saying that confirms this is; “Together we stand, Divided we fall”, and there are many ways to go about accomplishing this task. A way in which the relationship between the two can be strengthened is that they can come together and express the issues that concern one another so that they may stand on common ground. Once common ground is reached and everyone is on one page, the people will feel stronger and unified, and therefore feel the incentive to work together in order to alter life for the better. If there is division among the camp no grounds will be reached and no barriers overcome. We will be outnumbered in every area of life, and we will not be able to make a difference. Once united, African-Americans and Hispanics should come together and work to address community, cultural, political, and communication issues. If the minorities gather together and get involved in these aspects of society then they can literally change the world. Having a political influence is a very great accomplishment, and once there is a contact that has that form of influence then solving all other problems is a step away. A political leader can encourage unity within the community and then the communication issues can be dispersed of. Then the next task is making a better community where all needs are met for the individuals within, such as a better education for upcoming generation so that they may continue the work that has already been started and make an even greater difference. Also, take care of such issues as welfare and the less fortunate people of the country. Lastly, the cultural aspect of it all would be that standing up for your people and where you originated from would be emphasized and this would strengthen the populace even more. In conclusion, minorities no longer have to be looked upon as the weaker group of society, there is another way. We can come together and unify so that we can make a difference and enhance life on our own terms and make it better according to our needs. This movement should be encouraged in every way, and a method of this is Historically Black Colleges & Universities. These colleges and universities show that there are many people and corporations ready and willing to fight for this belief and as long as they continue to support this then it can go forth, grow, and make a difference. They can do this by enlarging the variety that they accept such as all minorities, and literally involving themselves, the actual institution, in political movements for minorities and the unification of us all.
